LA VETRATA DELLA CROCIFISSIONE
La vetrata della Crocifissione si trova all’interno della chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli, nella zona absidale, sopra l’altare, in una posizione che attira immediatamente l’attenzione.
Al centro è raffigurato il Crocifisso, cioè Cristo morto, con il capo reclinato, le braccia pendenti e il busto scorciato. Secondo la verità storica, i piedi di Gesù erano sovrapposti; in questa rappresentazione, invece, sono separati.
L’artista ha collocato il Crocifisso al centro della vetrata affinché lo sguardo dell’osservatore si concentri soprattutto su di lui. A destra si trova l’apostolo Giovanni, raffigurato imberbe e vestito di scuro. Esprime dolore, tiene le mani giunte e rivolge lo sguardo al Crocifisso. Anche lui è rappresentato di scorcio e guarda verso Maria, poiché Gesù gliel’ha affidata.
A sinistra si trova Maria addolorata: solitamente è vestita di nero, ma qui indossa un abito azzurro. Nell’iconografia, l’azzurro è il colore del cielo e indica che Maria è unita al Figlio anche nel momento della morte. Il suo gesto è definito, nell’iconografia, “gesto della compassione”.
Sul fondo della vetrata prevalgono colori caldi, in particolare il rosso, che rappresenta l’amore: Gesù, infatti, sulla croce dona la vita per amore. Il rosso è anche il colore del sangue e dunque del sacrificio.
THE CRUCIFIXION STAINED-GLASS WINDOW
The Crucifixion stained-glass window is located inside the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, in the apse, above the altar, in a position that immediately draws the visitors’ attention.
At the centre there is the Crucifix. Christ has his head bowed, his arms hanging, and his foreshortened bust. According to historical accounts, Christ’s feet were nailed one over the other; here they are shown separately.
The artist placed the Crucifix in the centre so that the viewer’s attention would focus on him. On the right side stands the beardless apostle John, dressed in dark clothing, expressing his grief, looking at the Crucifix and clasping his hands. He is foreshortened too and looks at Mary, because she was entrusted to him by Jesus.
On the left there is the sorrowful Mary; she is usually dressed in black, but here she is dressed in blue. In iconography, blue is the colour of the sky and it indicates her union with her Son even at the moment of death. She makes a gesture that in iconography is called the "gesture of compassion."
The background of the stained-glass window is dominated by warm colours: red is the colour of love because Jesus gave his life for love on the cross. Red also symbolises blood and sacrifice.
