VITA E FORMAZIONE
Trento Longaretti nasce a Treviglio (Bergamo) il 27 settembre del 1916. È il nono di tredici figli. Si avvicina alla pittura fin da bambino, realizzando piccoli dipinti.
Dopo le scuole medie frequenta il liceo e l’Accademia di Brera a Milano dove si diploma nel 1939. Durante le lezioni studia scultura, architettura e design ma deciderà di dedicarsi prevalentemente alla pittura. In questi anni stringe amicizia con il gruppo di “Corrente”, con i compagni di Accademia e con il suo maestro Aldo Carpi.
L’interesse per il disegno libero si concentra durante la fase della formazione e negli anni della guerra durante i quali si divide tra Slovenia, Sicilia e Albania documentando la tragicità causata dal conflitto.
Nel 1945 sposa Elsa Ferrari, l’anno successivo nasce la figlia Serena e due anni dopo il figlio Franco. In questo periodo oltre all’attività artistica inizia a dedicarsi alla professione di insegnante.
Nel 1953 vince il concorso per diventare Direttore e docente di pittura all’Accademia Carrara di Bergamo, succedendo ad Achille Funi, dando il suo contributo per ricreare un ambiente aperto, vivace e libero in seguito al regime e gli eventi bellici. Tra gli incarichi previsti dal ruolo vi è anche quello di Conservatore delle Gallerie che gli consente di partecipare al progetto di riallestimento delle sale espositive dell’Accademia. A seguito della nomina, si trasferisce a Bergamo dove nasce la figlia Maddalena. Resterà in città per il resto della sua vita.
Dopo 25 anni, nel 1978 lascia la Carrara e da quel momento si concentra soltanto sulla produzione artistica pur mantenendo un legame con l’Accademia. Oltre a ciò, si dedica con competenza e passione anche all’attività di collezionista sia di opere antiche che contemporanee. La collezione è ora di proprietà degli eredi, i quali mettono a disposizione le opere per iniziative di interesse culturale.
Compie per tutta la vita numerosi viaggi, raccontati soprattutto tramite opere ad acquarello.
Muore a Bergamo il 7 giugno 2017 all’età di 100 anni.

Life and education
Trento Longaretti was born in Treviglio (Bergamo) on September 27th, 1916. He was the ninth of thirteen children. When he was a child, he developed an interest in painting, creating simple artworks.
After middle school, he attended high school and the Brera Academy in Milan where he graduated in 1939. During his studies, he explored sculpture, architecture and design, deciding afterwards to focus especially on painting. In those years, he met and became friend of the “Corrente” group members, of his Academy classmates and of his mentor Aldo Carpi.
His interest in free painting developed during his studies and throughout World War II, when he lived in Sicily, Slovenia and Albania documenting the tragedy of the conflict.
In 1945 he married Elsa Ferrari; the following year, his daughter Serena was born and two years later his son Franco. In that period, in addition to his painting activity, he began working as a teacher.
In 1953, Trento Longaretti passed a public exam and became director and professor of painting at the “Accademia Carrara” in Bergamo, succeeding Achille Funi, contributing to recreate an open, free and dynamic environment, previously shaken by the war and the Fascist regime. His duties included working as art conservator: that allowed him to participate in the reorganization of the Accademia’s exhibition spaces. Afterwards, he moved to Bergamo where his daughter Maddalena was born and where he spent the rest of his life.
After 25 years, in 1978, he left the “Accademia Carrara” to focus only on his artistic career. Nevertheless, he maintained a strong relationship with the Accademia. Moreover, he devoted himself to collecting both old and contemporary artworks with expertise and passion. Nowadays, his heirs own his works and make them available for cultural events.
The artist has travelled his entire life, and he pictured his journeys mostly using the watercolor technique.
He passed away in Bergamo on June 7th, 2017, at the age of 100.
